Dear USA Editor
This response is in reference to your April 13 opinion "Our View; Expanding Health Insurance."
Your opinion incorrectly assumes that federal government has the right to use public money to provide health insurance for a portion of our citizens. Federal government does not have this right. Public money is taken from us, just like a thief takes our money.
Let us consider food, clothing, and shelter. Most rational people would consider these three items essential. It is true that government provides some level of subsidy to these essentials. I submit that those products receiving the most subsidy, the most government control and interference, are the ones in shortest supply. Seems like common sense to me. See if you agree.
Health care subsidy and control - Food & Drug Administration; Medicare; Medicaid; tax break for companies providing health care benefits; tax breaks to individuals with high medical expenses; federal and state restrictions or
subsidy on various health care businesses like HMO's or nursing homes; import restrictions or tariffs (drugs and medical appliances); research grants; restriction on the number of doctors that medical schools can turn out each year; restriction number of hospital beds in a given area state and local subsidy for hospitals; state and local subsidy for various clinics; federal, state and local subsidy for drugs, needles, and health care education (includes advertising campaigns about drugs, smoking, sex, cancer, impotence, you name it).
Housing subsidies and control - Housing and Urban Development (inner city public housing); federal low cost loan guarantees; tax breaks to individuals who own homes; state and local restrictions on building codes and zoning;
Food subsidies and control - Food and Drug Administration; federal farm subsidies; food import tariffs.
Clothing subsidies and control - School dress codes?
